Cross Country and Track Coach, 1996- 2006) Red guided HIES to a girls state track championship and a runner-up slot in cross-country during his tenure. Some of his stars included state champions Haley Kolff and Jenna Downey. Also founder of the Red Runners, Smith coached more than 3,000 runners, more than 600 country champions, 300 state champions and 50 national champions. He also had 10 national cross-country champions. Smith attended Georgia Tech where he was a member of both the cross-country and track teams after earning all-state honors in both at the Atlanta Boys’ High School. In 2004, the Atlanta Track Club presented him with its Coach of the Year award for his tireless work. Smith passed away Feb. 24th, 2008 after a long bout with Parkinson’s disease.
