Spring sports are in full bloom – this past Friday and Saturday saw some positive varsity action. The recaps are below:
Girls' soccer: Though it took 23 minutes instead of the usual 20, our girls got another conference win Friday, this time over Hapeville Charter 10-0.
Looking at the scoring output, Lauren Malsom had four, making this 14 goals in the last three games for the talented sophomore.
Avery Bennett added one, she has seven in the last three, while Avery Bradley had two, Alexandra Brown and
Ava McMasters one each, and an on goal accounting for the barrage.
Ella Metzner got the shutout.
Looking ahead features a big day ahead for Coach Clayton Schmitt & Company as they take on Westminster Tuesday at home at 4 p.m.
Golf: They had a long way to go to do it, but both the girls' and boys' varsity golf teams got off to a fairways-and-greens start down in Statesboro Saturday. The boys took 4
th out of 10 teams, while the girls were also competitive.
Starting with the boys, Nick McKay led the way, though he had great support from Matt Binney, James Carper,
Jack Grahams, Griffin Moore, and Cannon Mori.
The big news for the girls were freshman Brooke Benedict, who got third overall in her first varsity tournament, and senior
Katherine Stembridge, who played the best tournament of her career.
Looking ahead, both squads will return to action this Saturday for the Parkview Invitational.
Track & field: Our running, throwing, and jumping Bears got an unusual gift in their meet at the GAC Invitational in that the weather was perfect. The results weren't too bad either, as several had great showings which included two gold medal performances.
The two wins came from
Connor White in the pole vault and
Jacobi Murray in the shot put. Murray did his in school-record setting fashion with his throw of 52-plus feet. Connor just missed his personal record of 13-feet, one-inch in the vault.
Two more took third –
Coy Terry was third in the triple jump while
Mallory Tingle placed third in the 9
th/10
th1,600-meter run.
Speaking of the 1,600,
Colin Welden and
Carter Bennett excelled there as well – Colin turned in a 6:00 minute flat time while Carter beat his best time by nine seconds with a 5:21.
Looking at it all, the sprinters, jumpers, throwers, relays, vaulters, and distance people all held their own, mostly against big competitive.
The track squad will return to action this Saturday at Pace, for a two-day meet which will conclude the following Monday.
