Our Golden Bear football team proved once again they can play with the best of the best in the region. Unfortunately, for the second week in a row, it was a late touchdown that sank our hearts again, this time in a 26-22 loss to unbeaten Carver at Lakewood.
Â
The Bears now fall to 5-3, 2-2 in the region – and will take a deserved Fall Break and a bye week before facing Washington in two weeks.
Â
HI led 22-13 going into the final period, but the Panthers scored on a 75-yard run on 4
th down to cut the lead, then added another TD inside of a minute to seal their victory.
Â
The Bears led 10-7 after a quarter –
Ryan Woods hit
Brayden Bailey for a 51-yard TD to get on the scoreboard first; Carver answered with a TD on its next possession, and
Mitchell Bainbridge booted a field goal for HI from 27 yards out to end the first period scoring.
Â
Coach
Nick Perrotta's squad added a touchdown in the second period, set up by a Woods-to-
Alex Coley pass that put it at the Panther 1.
Denim Stevens ran it in from there to put the Bears up 17-7, a lead that held until intermission.
Â
Hi got a safety and a field goal in the third period –
Myles Jackson got the sack in the end zone. He ended the night with three sacks and a tackle for loss. Bainbridge tacked on a 39-yard field goal, but Carver added a TD in between to keep it close.
Â
Unfortunately, the final period proved a déjà vu of the week before, as Carver scored two TDs, the final one with only 43 seconds left to break our hearts.
Â
Still, many stepped up for the Bears –
Sam Chasteen was solid on both sides of the ball, as was Bailey who had well over 100 yards receiving. In addition to Jackson,
Bennett Burroughs,
Finn Ferrero,
Lucas Tiliakos, and
Jordan Mays were some of the many defensive stars.Â
