It was a typical spring sport weekend, meaning it was busy with plenty of varsity sports' action. Below are the recaps:
Â
Girls' lacrosse:Â Our Lady Laxers took care of business Friday in the rain on Turf Field as they edged Campbell High School 16-15 in a shootout. Kathleen Nichols was again the leading scorer, this time with nine goals, while Fallon Kaufman followed with three.
Â
Others who found the back of the net included Lizzy Lindner (2), Caroline Felton, and
Reese Neumann. On the defensive side of things, keeper Mary Katherine Noble had 11 saves.
Â
Boys' lax: The boys' lacrosse team put down Mt. Vernon on Turf Field by a 19-8 margin Saturday. Many starred –
Charles Mooney was a factor at the faceoff X,
Noah Carlson,
Peter Fleming, and
Jordan Alston were effective at the offensive end,
Pierce Preston was solid in goal, and Brooks Anderson had a great showing on defense.Â
Â
Boys' soccer: Coach Tyler Santee's squad was in action twice, Friday at Westminster and Saturday against LaGrange – also played at Westminster. In the 4-0 Friday loss to the Wildcats, "the kids played hard and it was one of our better games," per the coaching staff.Â
Â
Miller King stepped up in playing keeper, while shoutouts go to all who competed hard against a good Wildcat team.
Â
On Saturday, they dropped a 5-1 decision to LaGrange –
Sairis Panah scored the goal on an assist from
Luca Schittone. King and
Evan Wandtke split time in goal and both had good games, and
Tucker Gleeson and
Matthew Taylor were also solid all over.Â
Â
Girls' soccer: The Lady Bears took their successful show on the road – they went to Hilton Head and shutout Hilton Head Prep 7-0. The scoring barrage was led by
Olivia Hutcherson, who is fresh off an All-State and Final Four basketball year. She scored three goals, while
Soli Panah,
Colette Harwell,
Avery Bradley, and Lauren Malsom all added one each.
Â
Boys' golf: The golf team traveled to Athens Saturday for the UGA Classic. Nick McKay led the way; he had good support from
Parker Miles, Matt Binney, and
Carlton Forrester.Â
Â
Baseball: The baseball squad was rained out Friday but rescheduled it for Saturday and came away with a 15-4 region win over Southwest DeKalb on the road. HI pounded out 15 hits, led by
Taylor Fuller, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI.
Â
Chandler Ketchup and
Emmett Campbell both were 2-for-4 – Campbell drove in two and Ketchup one.
Braxton Padgett had a 2-for-2 outing. Others with hits were
Matt Luigs,
Dylan Radaszewski,
Whit McGrotty (who also drove in three runs),
Ian Graves,
Luke Binney, and
Will Holland. Â
Â
On the mound, Fuller also got the win in throwing four solid innings.
Jack Fernandez and
Griffin Bittel got some work – Bittel fanned three in just 1 1/3 innings.Â
Â
Track: The track team competed at the GAC Invitational, where 11 boys' teams and 13 girls' squads went at it . Highlights were three-fold, as HI had two athletes take first in two different events, one school record going down, and another gold medal performance as well.Â
Â
Skyler Hall and Caleb Walker were the double winners – Skyler broke the tape in both the 100- and 200-meter runs while Walker captured the crowns in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. Walker also earlier took fourth in the high jump and ran a leg of the 2nd place 4 X 400-relay team along with Brooks Scarborough, Alex Artigue, and Ethan Ganucheau. As for the school record,
Drew Bomar – in taking first in the triple jump – set a new HIES mark of 44 feet, 4 inches.Â
Â
Also,
Connor White wasn't to be outdone, as he once again placed first in the pole vault, this time with a 12-foot performance.Â
Â
There were other solid showings –
Lindsey Ponder placed in the discus, Kaden Jackson won his heat in running a PR in the 100, Gavin Miles ran a 5:01 in the 1,600 meter run, and many performed well, mostly against bigger schools.Â
