Bears Win Rumble in the Rain

Upend Lovett 14-7

It was a case of revenge at the river in the rain Friday night for our football team, as Holy Innocents' avenged a Homecoming loss to the Lions a year ago only to return the favor this time around in a 14-7 victory at Lovett.

The points all came in the first half – and after a torrential downpour at halftime and beyond, the second half was a case of "just don't fumble, ping-pong on grass" punter's dual with HI holding on for the win.

Coach Nick Perrotta & Company go to 5-1 with the victory, 2-0 in the region, with the next contest slated for Friday at Baker Field against Hapeville Charter at 6:30 p.m. when conference play continues. This will be the first game at Baker under the lights.

The Bears led 7-0 after the first eight minutes – HI went on an eight-play, 75-yard drive finished off by a 17-yard TD strike from Ryan Woods to Brayden Bailey. Denim Stevens had some good runs on the march to set things up.

The second quarter saw both teams finding the end zone. Lovett tied it with 4:08 left in the half on an 11-yard TD pass – the TD aided by a key face mask penalty on the Bears on a Lion 4th-and long.

But HI answered on their next possession, taking it 58 yards for the score. Woods-to-Bailey connected twice during this – the first got the Bears to the 12 before the two hooked up again three plays later for the 12-yard score.

The second half saw just holding on to the ball a chore, though the Bear defense never let up rain or shine. Stars on that side of the ball were plenty – Jordan Mays had a sack and a tackle for loss while Finn Ferrero was another of many who stepped up.

All in all, the win was huge – with the Bears now in striking position to contend for a region title, though there is plenty of football and plenty of good teams looming ahead on the schedule.
