Mike Thornton – Head Middle School Football Coach
Mike Thornton is beginning his 15th year coaching football at Holy Innocents’ and his first
as head coach of the middle school teams. Coach Thornton has coached football for a
total of 36 years, including coaching at all levels from recreational football to college. Mike
was a three year letterman at Washington and Lee University, earning all- conference
as a senior. He coached offensive line at W&L four years and also served as head
coach at Virginia Episcopal School before starting a law career in Atlanta. He served as
a community coach at Lovett before coming to HI. Coach Thornton has also coached
lacrosse at Lovett and HI, winning a co-state championship in lacrosse at Lovett in 2004.
Mike teaches History in the middle school. He has one son, former HI teacher and coach
Eamon Thornton, and two grandchildren.
