Basketball Squads Enjoy 2-0 Weekend

Wrestling squad gains valuable mat experience

Our hoops' squads heated up the cold winter over the weekend, with both the girls and boys going 2-0, while our young Bear wrestlers gained valuable mat experience with good results at North Atlanta.

Starting with girls' basketball, Coach Nichole Dixon started the weekend with an impressive 59-47 win over Carrollton Friday at home. Balance was the key as it often is, with Hailee Swain netting 18 points, Makayla Weaver 16, Nakhai Worthy 15, and Loriel Murray 10.

With no rest for the weary, our Bears knocked off another more than impressive opponent in Baldwin County the following night by a 64-53 margin. Swain took the Tasha Butts Classic MVP honors for her play, this time scoring 17 points, while Nakhai contributed 14.

Looking ahead, they will take on Hardaway on the road this upcoming Saturday, with tipoff at 11:30 a.m. at Grayson High School.

The boys weren't to be outdone, Coach Mario Mays & Company easily took care of Hapeville 67-36 at home Friday before topping Alexander 72-58 at Wheeler Saturday.

Caleb Wilson continues to be the Main Man in the Middle, as his stat numbers were these: 27 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocked shots against Hapeville, to go with 32 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 blocked shots against Alexander.

Other key contributors in the Hapeville win were Devin Hutcherson (12 points, 4 rebounds) and Jordan Mays (7 points).

In the Alexander win, Kai Worthy had 10 points and 2 rebounds; Devin Hutcherson added 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists.

The boys will return home Tuesday when they face Booker T. Washington.

Over on the wrestling mats, our young Bears gained good experience at Mt. Vernon Wednesday, with both J.B. Blount and Phillip Griffin winning by pins, before moving on to North Atlanta Saturday.

At North Atlanta, Thomas Dougherty took 2nd – he fell in overtime in the finals – while Blount finished 3rd and Griffin 4th. Dyer Fields placed 3rd in JV competition.

Coach Stacey Davis's squad will return home Wednesday to face Dunwoody at 5 p.m.
