Below are the words from wrestling Coach Stacey Davis, summing up a challenging but excellent wrestling season. Please take the time to read and, of course, Go Bears!
Â
"WOW.  Bears wrestling continued its success yesterday as we closed out the wrestling season in Macon last night @ the State Wrestling Tournament. We finished 6
th as a team but that was just a small part of a bigger picture for me as a coach. We had 6 out of 10 guys become State placers.Â
Â
Covid has become the most talked about subject as this pandemic has brought crippling fear to our society. As well it should, but as a coach I could not be prouder of our program and what these young men and women who were part of this season contributed to the new norm for Bear Wrestling.Â
I am proud to say that our wrestling team did not have one confirmed case in our program.Â
Â
Our kids were asked to do more with new policies that were put in place to help maintain their safety in arguably the toughest sport. Many on the team conquered personal health issues that would have sidelined the average kid. They choose to be part of the season versus opting out. Â This required being remote or multiple times having to restart their season as many were contact traced out. Every challenge was met and worked through.
Â
I saw our seniors
Robert McDonald and Izzy Evans, who both qualified for the State Tournament find themselves competing again several of the best wrestlers in the state at their respective Class A division. Our juniors stepped to the forefront capturing dominant State championships with Art Martinez capturing his first championship with 16 – 0 finals match and
Jake Swink making history to become the first Holy Innocents' wrestler to win three state championships with a dominant finals performance after missing over half the season with an injury.
Â
James Gleeson again finished in top 4 for the second year in a row giving notice that is still closing in his own state championship and Britt Hilton not only qualified for the tournament but a strong performance to finished fifth in his weight class. Â
Rhett Sherk had another strong showing in second state tournament. Sophomore
Terry Moore broke into the lineup this season and capped his first state tournament by winning several overtime matches to place fifth in one of the deepest weight class in Class A that saw multiple previous state champions and placers in his weight class.
Â
But perhaps the biggest thrill of the tournament was seeing our freshman Tucker Gleeson have an amazing tournament as he knocked off a top 4 seed of the tournament and Nick Morgan make a run to the state semi- finals and battle for a fifth place finish. Â
Â
These young men did not opt out, they did not make any excuses, they did not blame Covid. They simply stepped up and represented what it means to be a Golden Bear and I could not be prouder of this group. What a surreal experience as a coach. INCREDIBLE."
